Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue

Our Nation's leading donkey rescue

Big Bend Ranch, TX

UPDATE:  Richard Bruner, of Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue,  is heading up a team of wranglers to go into the Big Bend Ranch Park in early December 2009 to remove burros.  Your financial help is needed to help fund this continuing project.

No one knows how long the burros have lived in the Big Bend area of Texas.  Some people think that the early ranchers had them to watch over their flocks, others think that they were left behind by the Spanish Conquistadors over 400 years ago.

As it happens in so many places around the country, the burros were ignored until they became a problem.  In this case, the State of Texas wants to reintroduce big horn sheep in order to take advantage of the revenue generated by allowing people to hunt them.   Texas Parks and Wildlife made the decision that the burros may compete with the big horn sheep and wanted them gone.

Their first plan was to shoot the burros on sight.  Nearly 100 wild burros were destroyed in the manner.  After a public outcry, Peaceful Valley was called in.  To date we have had little success in capturing the burros.  Limited access points, flooding and lack of funding are all obstacles that we are dealing with.  We have a new volunteer that is going to head up the capture and hopefully get the program up and running.
