Charity Navigator, as well as most other rating sites, do not take into account important issues.
#1 Input vs. Output
We take in donations and we rescue donkeys. To date, we have
successfully used the gifts from donors and rescued over one thousand
donkeys with that money. Without these gifts, we could never be able to
rescue donkeys all across the United States. The current rating
systems used by online charity advisor sites do not measure
productivity, just cost.
#2 Program Expenses
A program expense, in our line of work, includes feed and vet care. It
does not include the land that we must purchase, the hay barn to protect
the hay, the tractor to move the hay and clean the manure, the trucks
and trailers to move the donkeys in and out of the ranch, or the payroll
necessary to pay the people that feed the donkeys.
#3 Fundraising Expense
As a National Rescue, we must solicit funds nationally. Using the US
Postal Service is still the cheapest way to do this. TV, Radio and
Newspapers Ads are more costly and do not target the people who support
our work. Of the Fund Raising Expense, 42% goes to postage.
#4 In-House Fund Raising
In 2007 and 2008, I have undertaken the additional task of raising money
through in-house programs. These programs are much less expensive than
our direct mail campaigns and have substantially lowered our costs.
#5 Reminding Donors to Give
Most of our donors will not give if they do not receive a reminder. Our
greatest cost is in the need to remind donors to give.
Thank you for taking the time to understand our situation. I hope this information helped explain our numbers. We all truly appreciate your belief in our cause.
