“Life Without Animals” (a poem)

By: Rachael Komulainen, written June 2007

There could be no darker day, than life without animals
Imagine a world missing our truest companions
No donkeys, cats, dogs, horses, lizards, or birds
Muzzles, tails, whiskers, hooves, scales and fur would not exist
Can you imagine such a bleak day as that?

No one to greet you as you arrived home from work
No walks around the block on a beautiful spring day
No unconditional love kisses from a furry face
No one to comfort you when you’re crushed by another human

No one to tell our darkest, deepest secrets to with no fear of betrayal
No one to lick the salt-stained streaks from your face
Or to come running across the pasture just because you drove up
Can you imagine such a bleak day as that?

It is impossible to really comprehend such a hole in life
Our lives would seem empty and incomplete
Fortunately, we do not have to contemplate such a lonely existence
Since we are lucky enough to have life WITH animals
