October 2003
In my career as a rescuer, I had made three simple promises:
1. I will improve the Plight of the American Donkey.
2. I will be a part of something bigger than myself.
3. I will not allow my cause to die with me.
I have tried to heed JB Wise and never settle for second. I have remembered Elmer and never been the toughest guy in the world, just the toughest one in the room. And while I may not be remembered as the most popular, I can honestly say that my intentions were pure.
When I am gone, I do not want a marble tribute in a grassy field
recalling my name and dates. Nor would I appreciate a roadside memorial of candles and crosses. And I am not at all interested in having my name on a stadium, building or freeway. All I hope for is that my memory will be passed on as my story is repeated in the brays, barks and various other sounds of the animals whose lives I was fortunate enough to have been a part of.
