Why Donkeys?

In 2002, I saw a picture of Eastern North Carolina on the internet and we figured the weather would be the same since it is along the same latitude.  Time for an adventure, we thought, so in the fall of 2002 Marlin and I moved from Los Angeles to Eastern North Carolina.  We got a little square of land and, one post hole at a time, began building the DonQui XoteL, now known as the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue North Carolina Satellite Adoption Center.

Why Donkeys?  A question we are asked often.  The simple answer is that one animal opened our eyes to the neglect and abuse suffered by Donkeys.  Once you see how you can be of service, what else can you do.

Through the United States Equine Rescue League, we adopted our first Donkey.  Her name was Dixie at USERL, but we called her DOLLY.  She had badly deformed hooves and coffin bones due to neglect, which made walking very painful for her.  We cared for her as well as we could for as long as we could and finally had to let her go to rest in comfort.  Dolly inspired us to help donkeys whenever we could; so we began looking for a way to make the lives of Donkeys better.  Eventually we became affiliated with Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, which is the nation’s largest donkey rescue of it's kind.   Our place in Pollocksville is the local adoption center, and since the arrival of the first PVDR Donkey in April of 2010 we have been finding good loving homes for the Donkeys in our care.  If you are interested in learning more about Donkeys, volunteer opportunities, or are interested in adopting a new Friend you can contact us, come visit in Pollocksville, or go to www.donkeyrescue.org.

Buffalo Gal & Jupiter

Buffalo Gal and Jupiter are living in Siler City NC with their new family Karen, Keith and their new friend Leander.  Leander was looking for a new donkey friend when Karen Learned about Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue' Satellite Adoption Center in Pollocksville NC. When Karen came to visit and meet the donkeys, she was looking for one friend for Leander.  When she saw Buffalo Gal and Jupiter, Karen knew that there was enough love for both so Leander got two friends.  Now Leander and the girls are living happily together.
