Cattle
Our current cattle herd includes one cow (a female cattle) and two
steers
(castrated male cattle). Our cow is a Holstein and her name is
Apple. Apple was found at a livestock auction where many animals
are too sick to sell and are simply tossed away. The Holstein
breed is used for milk production and the males are ground into
hamburger for the fast food industry.
Our steers are Jerseys and they are also a dairy breed. The
milk from Jerseys
is
high in fat and is used in the production of ice cream. The males
of the breed do not get big enough to make them profitable for hamburger
and are taken at birth and left to die. Peaceful Valley has saved
12 of these steers and has placed them in homes as pets. Our two
residents are named Albert and Buford. Both have more personality
than most people.
